Meditation versus Mindfulness

What is meditation?  Being a Yoga teacher since 1990, I have always described meditation as a ‘timeout’ for the mind, where you create a focal point and connect to your highest self and higher consciousness.  It is important to hold the highest intent for the highest good or a positive vibe.  Your focal point can be internal or external, using all or one of your senses.  Meditation has been proven to change your brainwaves from Beta/active, through to Alpha/warm and fuzzy, then Theta/creative solution with Delta/deep sleep  and Gamma/heighten awareness.  Meditation is a technique that can be learnt to assist relief from stress, create tolerance, compassion, purpose and more.

What is mindfulness?  Being a Reiki Master since the 90s, I first became aware of the term ‘mindfulness’ when I was studying Reiki Jin Kei Do.  It was being mindful of each moment.  Yoga also teaches “awareness of awareness” which is being mindful of each moment.  When you are aware you are conscious.  Being conscious is an important part of the choices we make.  Which brings us to “the highest intent for the highest good”.

Meditation is a broader technique that can include mindfulness.  Meditation is normally experienced in a sacred space.  Why? because you can go very deep during meditation.  Mindfulness can be done at any moment of your day; and can be a type of meditation.

What will you choose to do for your well-being?
