Resistance | |
What does resistance mean to you? In Psychoanalysis it is the, *”reluctance to bring to the surface of awareness unconscious material that has been repressed” Resistance can be anything on a physical, emotional, mental or spiritual level that gives a false sense of “ok” and blocks change. Resistance can be masking fears and anxieties, and can indicate your current defence states. Resistance can be a part of our survival instincts, as in survival, change doesn’t always mean better. Change is a part of life. Every step you take involves letting go of the previous step, before taking the next. Change can be challenging, because it shifts the status quo. You can feel uncomfortable and your comfort zones will be stretched. You can also find there is a common pattern, in the way you handle change or any resistance. Finding the fine line of allowing and balance will be a slightly different journey for each individual, depending on what level the resistance to change is occurring. Being honest with yourself is a key factor to understanding what you are resisting. Ask yourself, are you resisting any change within your life? What scares you, about the change? What key factors can assist? Are you being honest? Reflect on the words “What you resist, persists!” Knowing that change will occur, whether you resist or not, does this make you say, “why bother”. If you resist, it can just take longer, if you relax and go with the flow, it can be a ride. Can being too relaxed be a different version of resistance? “Whatever” was a common statement from teenagers moving through change. How do you cope with change? If you need assistance ask for a coaching session. Reference: *”Theory and Practice of Counseling and Pschotherapy” by Gerald Corey | |
